Looking For Help with Something...

I have been thinking for a long time now about doing a regular post to Flip of recorded feedback of individual animated shots. So simply put, somebody who might want the chance to get input on their work from an industry professional, could, in theory, send me a link to their video and I could post back a video review session here on Flip, for the animator and other visitors to watch.

I'm imagining short animation tests, could be just blocking or final animation, but something I can discuss in about 10 or 20 minutes.

I want to do this for a few reasons:
  • I want a bit more 'regularity' to the site, one or two of these a week could be cool.
  • This kind of thing helps me filter all the crap that spins around in my head constantly.
  • There is an army of animators who would destroy me in a talent fight, but I reckon I`ve worked pretty hard and my opinion is valid.
  • It seems like people who are teaching themselves (like I did) could benefit from it especially.
The thing is... I think I have the setup to make this work on my laptop, but I could do with someone sending me a test so I could do a sample review and just see if it will actually work how I imagine it to. It would be good to use that as the example when I officially start this idea.

If you like this idea, drop a quick comment so I can gauge this a bit, and if you think you have something I could do the test run with, send me an email with a link to a .mov file.

Update: Thanks so much to everyone that expressed interest and took the time to send me a shot for the test run. I really appreciate that. Due to a somewhat overwhelming amount of requests, I would like to kindly ask people to no longer send clips for the test run. If I can get this going as I plan, I will setup a proper way for you to submit a shot for review through the blog.

Hey Cameron!

I've been reading Flip for a few years now and find tremendous value in every post. (Inspiration is Better than Coffee). I'm really excited about the idea you have proposed! I don't have your email link but you can check out a piece of mine at http://www.colinstuartanimation.com/videos/LothMatchmove_360.mov The style of animation that I'm interested in is different than what you do at Dreamworks but I'm sure your feedback will be helpful. I can't wait to see more on this!

Hi !

I'm sure a lot of people will be very interested and excited about this. I am for sure. I discovered your blog just a few weeks ago and there are a lot of great stuff on it.

I've send you a short e-mail (since 300 caracter max is pretty small) with a link to a shot if you're interested.

Hope you will find what you need for your test run in all the shot you'll probably receive.

Happy animating and all the best !

Quentin

While this seems like manna from heaven to starting animators like myself, Id maybe suggest announcing one and then doing it as opposed to a regular thing. Regualr would be fantastic but may just become too much pressure to keep up. You could make it like the competitions on Spungella: once ina while when you've time but a little notice so's people can get prepared. Hark at me telling you how you how to spend your time.... I'd just hate to get all excited and have it just be too much pressure on the guy doing it so it becomes a burden instead of a pleasure. Sorry if i'm way off the mark there. It wuld be brilliant though if it was all ok and went ahead as you proposed.

Good luck!

Hi Cameron,
I've been following your blog for a long time now and I can't tell you how happy it makes me to read this particular post.
I've already sent you an e-mail of a little piece that I did a few weeks back. I hope it'll help you to do a test run for this amazing idea.
Thanks a lot

Yeah man that sounds like a great idea! I know of a LOT of people that would be interested in something like this. And you're right, its a great way I find to really have your "animation eye" grow even more. I've got some blocking from a short anim I started workin on a while back. I started splining it but I think too prematurely. I'm in Animation Mentor now and have abandoned this shot for the next while (too busy with work and hmwk), but if you need something to test with and no one else posts you can have at it! :D Not sure what kind of resolution you'd like these at so this is the shot cam I originally setup. It's half of 1920X817. Film aspect without the 2:40 added.

If you need anything else to help with the testing feel free to message me!

Cheers!

That sounds really descent and I think I'd probably drop in a link every once in a while. I've got a couple of animations that I'm going to be working on over the next while, so that could be cool.

This sounds like a really awesome offer! I hope this is something you are able to do regularly. I just bought a new animation program, so I'll send you some tests after I get my license. Thanks!

Hi Cameron,
I wanted to tell you how inspiring and helpful is your work and your comments in your blog for me. I'm very happy to know that you want to make your blog more alive and that you are willing to share, even more, your time and knowledge with all of us.

I think giving other people feedback on their work is a very great idea, with your talent you will help a lot to everyone that still learning about animation, as me.

Thanks!

Hey Cameron. I haven't had any of my work critiqued in a long time and I would definitely be happy to get some professional feedbacks on them. I did a couple of animation tests for a studio recently and sad to say, I failed all three of them. If it's ok with you, I'd like to have you look at one of the tests. Cheers!

Hey Cameron,

I think this is a great idea! I don't have anything I'm working on right now as the hours at work are a bit crazy, but it's definitely something I'd like to take advantage of when I get some down-time to work on my own stuff.

Cheers

Hey Cameron. I love this idea and appreciate you being willing to share talents with others. As someone animating in games with feature ambitions, I would like to see this happen. I hope to have something worth submitting in the near future.

Thanks!

Hey Cam,
I think this is a great idea. It would be a great way to learn directly from a seasoned animator Striving animators would benefit a greatly by seeing the critique.

This would be an amazing idea and a great opportunity. i can only imagine how busy you must be but selfishly i think all animators would love it :)

I don't have a clip now (annoyingly as i know you are going to get endless clips in about a day!) but can't wait to see the feedback.

Hi there! Im a second year Ringling student studying Computer Animation. The point of this assignment was to make our character turn. This i think is my weakest animation of the semester, so if you rip it apart it would make me very happy!
